FLY FISHING'S
UPDATES By Fran Betters

LABOR DAY WEEKEND FISHING UPDATE
The good news on the AuSable and the Saranac is that the
river is still producing good hatches of Isonychias, Large stoneflies,
some pumpkin caddis and lots of blue wings olives. Our three guides
have been kept busy every evening (evening fishing is best now) and lots
of fish in the fifteen to eighteen inch range have been taken. Most of
these fish were taken on size 12 dark dun haystacks, dark dun
parachutes, Ausable Wulffs and smaller dun caddis and size 12 pumpkin
caddis. The largest trout of the week (a 22 inch brown) was taken on a
dark dun haystack just at dark in a fast water section of the river .
There hasn't been any need to fish the small midges or trico as most of
the larger fish are being taken in the faster water pockets and pool .
Water temperature as of this update is still a comfortable 65 degrees.
A couple of warm nights with temperature in the high 50's has produced
some good early morning fishing. Best fishing hours are from six to
nine in the morning and from three to nine in the evening. Lots of
large stoneflies are coming off in the evening so a large no 8 stone fly
fished dry and bounced around the pockets and fast water often brings up
the bigger fish.
When in the area, stop at the Adirondack Sport Shop and we'll be happy
to give you a free casting lesson. For those needing a guide or
instructor for a full or half day, please reserve early as we get very
busy the entire month of September. We also have guides that specialize
in drift trips for Atlantic Landlocked salmon on the Ausable, the
Saranac and the Bouquet. The fish will begin to come into the river
around mid September or as soon as the rains bring the rivers up a bit
and the temperature drops to around 50 degrees. The last two weeks of
September til the end of October is the best time to go for the salmon.
>From Labor day til mid September you have the best of both worlds -
great trout fishing on the West Branch and a chance to try your luck at
catching a trophy Atlantic Salmon without traveling great distances and
without great expense. For further information on drift trips and
guide/instructor trips, call (518) 946-2605 or e-mail us from this
site. Call anytime for up to date fishing conditions.
Best patterns for the coming weekend are Ausable Wulffs, dark dun
haystacks, dun parachutes, rusty orange caddis, blue winged olives and
large dry yellow bodied stoneflies.
Remember the FREE BARBECUE AND FLY FISHING CLINIC Saturday, Sept 2.
During the clinics, we run specials on all our fly rod outfits with a
20% discount. Come enjoy some good food and lots of information on fly
fishing along with some free casting instructions from our professional
staff.
