FLY FISHING'S UPDATES
By Fran Betters

Fly Fishing Update for October

September was one of the best months of fishing on both the West Branch of the Ausable and the Saranac river systems. There were continuous hatches of Isonychias, caddis and blue winged olives. I am happy to report that these hatches are still occurring on the West Branch and the fishing continues to be excellent. The water level is low but the water temperatures are in the low sixties and high 50's so the fish are still very active. The Ausable Wulff in sizes 10 and 12 are still taking lots of larger trout in the sixteen to 22 inch range. The parachute Isonychia and the size 14 and 16 blue winged olives are still taking lots of fish. The forecast for the coming week is light rain that should be a blessing for the streams. It will also bring in the salmon that are stacked up at the mouths of the Saranac, the Ausable and the Bouquet. We should be getting some great salmon fishing for the next seven or eight weeks. Our guides have already gotten a number of bookings for the salmon fishing and it looks like there are plenty of fish ready to migrate into the rivers. For those who intend to try their luck at catching some of these beautiful and tasty Atlantic Landlock Salmon, you will find Smelt patterns to be extremely productive when the fish are fresh in the streams. I have developed three different Smelt patterns that have proven very productive. When in the area, stop in at the Adirondack Sport shop and pick up a few or I'll be happy to show you how to tie these patterns. If you wish, you may order them through my web site or by calling (518) 578-2283.

NOTE: Make a check mark on your calendar for October 14. It is the date of our big annual Pig Roast bash. Lots of good food, free beer and two pigs are roasted and you are invited to join us. It's FREE and also a good time to take advantage of our Everything in the Shop Sale at 20% Off. This includes all rods, autographed books by Fran and means EVERY thing. A great chance to get that custom rod or buy someone a nice vest or shirt for Christmas. Plan on staying over a few days to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and to fish for the salmon or trout on the river. Our professional staff is always available to give you a free casting lesson or assist you any way we can to make your visit to the Adirondacks a memorable one.
